Precisely a year old, and hence my youngest piece yet uploaded, this painting focuses on a tree that stood behind the house I lived in for eighteen years. I moved out six years ago, and my parents have since sold the house; I don't know if this tree even stands anymore. I had just recently discovered this technique of painting lighter pigment on a dark ground, and I had been aching to do something with tree silhouettes, so when Christmas rolled around and I wanted to do a piece for my folks' new house, this came to mind. I missed the old home, and I thought this might capture the feeling of being there well; this tree was a pretty predominant figure. I wanted to describe it in a way that transcended mere form, so that the piece was more than a description of physical appearance, but rather an emotional narrative, and by exaggerating patterns of snow on the branches, abstracting the silhouette, and suggesting a fully-leafed canopy and winter conditions simultaneously, I came close to what I wanted. Do I have what I wanted? Oh hell no. But that's why I keep my brushes when I finish a piece....
